Importance of Thanksgiving

Hey folks, Thanksgiving is just a day away and I bet you are as excited as I am. We have had a long and busy semester; now is the time to relax and unwind with our friends and family.

Thanksgiving Day is an important annual holiday celebrated both in the United States and Canada, although celebrated on different dates. Thanksgiving is important because it is a positive and secular holiday where we celebrate gratitude, something that we do not do enough of these days. It is also a celebration honoring the fall harvest and other blessings that have occurred during the previous year.

Thanksgiving reflects a sense of interconnectedness among people and cultures. In these trying times, I think we need this day more than ever. It is a holiday that is perfect for gathering with our loved ones and expressing gratitude for our blessings, especially being healthy and alive. Thanksgiving should be a reminder to appreciate all that is joyful in our lives, our beloved family, friends, and colleagues, as well as our lifestyle, good health, and the little things we have taken for granted. I particularly love this holiday because it focuses on all things positive, free of materialistic motivations such as mindless gift-giving. Thanksgiving is a holiday that reminds me that there is more to be thankful for than to be sad about.

Given everything that’s happening in the world right now and the instability, fear, and uncertainty that many of us feel, there is no better time than now to stop and give thanks for all that is good. We need to continually remind ourselves of the importance of incorporating gratitude into our stream of consciousness, and remember that even if it seems as if we’ve hit rock bottom, there’s always hope that we’ll come out on the other side.

As cases continue to increase rapidly across the country, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with. This is because gatherings with people who do not live with you can increase the chances of contracting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu.

With that being said, let us make the most of this holiday by connecting with our friends and family, enjoying our turkey to the fullest, connecting with friends over zoom, giving to the less privileged, and reaching out to those you know have lost loved ones - they may feel lonely. Most importantly, relax and have as much fun as you can because you deserve it!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! Please stay safe!
